This is a terrific book. It's formatted in much of the same way that "cooking" fiction books are formatted except instead of recipes throughout the story it's directions to help kids make the gadgets that the characters use on their quest. This is the book that every young engineer and scientist will adore.
I recommend this book to readers 9-13. The robots will need a bit of adult help if they want to create the robots (batteries and cutting wire).
