The gathering stars Maya an adopted Native American girl who lives in a small company run town in the wilderness in Canada. Maya's father is a forest ranger and Maya rehabilitates animals that have been hurt in the forest including wild cats who have recently become more aggressive. Maya and her best guy friend Daniel have had a close relationship that always stays just outside the romantic zone. Shockingly a new handsome boy arrives in town and things start to get complicated.
I really enjoyed this book but it did have it's flaws. The supernatural elements didn't really show up until the end and it moved very slowly. Most of the questions that were introduced were not answered and everything for the most part was just creepy weird and more contemporary than paranormal. I did like the characters and will be reading the next in the series.
Appropriateness: There is a bit of underage drinking but no drunkenness. There's a bit of sexual content but no sex. I'd recommend this book to teens 13+
