Haven

Haven by Kristi Cook features Violet, a girl who has visions that let her see the future.  After her fathers death Violet is sent to Winterhaven a boarding school where all the students have special abilities ranging from mind reading to shape shifting to astral projection.  While at Winterhaven Violet meets a mysterious boy named Aiden whom she quickly falls for, but when she has a horrible vision of his death she worries that she will not be able to change the future.

I had mixed feelings about this book.  The mythology reminded me of a combination of other popular series, The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening and The StruggleEvernight (Evernight, Book 1)Hex Hall Book OneEvermore: The Immortals and Twilight (The Twilight Saga, Book 1). I also didn't buy the passion in Aiden and Violets relationship.  He seemed like a nice boyfriend, but their connection didn't seem to be earth shattering and some of the aspects of their relationship had me rolling their eyes.  I did love the setting and Violets friendships.  The mysteries were also fairly interesting.

Appropriateness:  There are no drugs or alcohol in the book and all the kids seem to be fairly good kids who are very concerned about their studies.  There is some talk of sex but no actual sex and the relationship between Violet and Aiden is fairly healthy.  Violet and her friends are high school Juniors.  I would put the interest level at 13+.
