Scones and Sensibility

Scones and Sensibility by Lindsay Eland follows Polly a romantic twelve year old girl obsessed with Pride and Prejudice and Anne of Green Gables.  She is wistfully romantic and talks like a character in those books (and her friends and family good naturedly put up with it) and decides that she wants to help her friends and family find romance.  Unfortunately she's more interested in her idea of the perfect relationship than what is the best for her friends.

Scones and Sensibility is a delightful novel for the young romantic.  Polly's understanding of love and romance is fresh and innocent and a delight to read.  I finished the book quickly and was delighted in all of Polly's mishaps.  The references to classic romances will encourage young readers to pick up those novels (or watch the movie if they're not up to Jane Austin).

My seven year old daughter picked this one out at the bookstore.  When we got home I read the back cover and asked her if she liked romance as the book was all about romance.  She giggled and said that she liked romance a little.  I told her that I'd read it and see if I thought it was something she would like but that I thought she probably would want to wait till she was a little older but if she really wanted to she could read it.  After reading it I told her what it was about and how it was difficult to read and she decided that it could wait a few years.

Appropriateness:  There isn't any adult material in the book and the romance is tame enough that a young child would not be put off by it, the romance is mostly matchmaking.  However, because Polly talks like she is in the 1800's it is not an easy read.  The publisher lists it as at a mid fifth grade level.  I would recommend it to romantic 11-14 year olds who are looking for a sweet fun romance.
